Johann Georg Ebeling, born in Lüneburg in 1637, has so far been regarded solely as the successor to Johann Crüger (1598–1662) as a teacher at the Gymnasium zum Grauen Kloster and Nikolaikantor in Berlin, where he worked with Paul Gerhardt (1607–1676), among others. In 1668, Ebeling was appointed cantor at the Schloss- and Marienkirche churches and at the newly founded Gymnasium Carolinum in Stettin. In Lutheran Vorpommern, he was able to leave behind the confessional conflicts that prevailed in Kurbrandenburg, but politically turbulent times also awaited him under Swedish rule. He died in Stettin in 1676. Apart from his famous edition of Paul Gerhardt's hymns (Geistliche Andachten, 1666/67), Ebeling left behind only a few, hitherto little-known compositions for two to six voices and instruments. The works presented here were written for the funerals of noblewomen in Berlin and Lübbenau and for a presumably secular occasion in Stettin.
